DJ Nikki Beatnik
She needs little introduction, the incredible DJ Nikki Beatnik has been blazing trails, DJ decks and stages for well over three decades but her recent success being awarded at the Nighttime Industry Awards was an exceptional achievement to top an already illustrious career.
DJ Nikki Beatnik is one half of electronic duo Beatnik and has been the tour DJ for Kelis and worked with a plethora of stars from Beyonce to Jay-Z.
For us it was the incredible concept of Mums That Rave which really sparked our admiration.
Our founder, Sapphira, met her at the Nighttime Industries Association Awards where Nikki deservedly won an award for her innovation with Mums That Rave and the pair hit it off which lead to this interview.
“When you become Mum as DJ I noticed there’s brands that won’t book you. I noticed quite a few brands stopped booking me there’s connotations you’re not youth led so Mums That Rave is about that, there there are loads of Mums doing incredible things. I feel many Mum DJs have to give up because you just can’t be out all the time,” she laments.
“ All our friend group is all quite similar, we all came from a love of fashion and music and club culture, hip hop and house and black music culture. All of us are multi-hyphenate and now Kelis has her skincare and retrained as a chef and it’s feast or famine and we’re all systems are go or there’s a gap and we’re doing Mum stuff. So I’ve known her since she was 18 and Mums That Rave sits under the production side Beatnik with my brother, and now I’m doing my designs and my prints. I always had a fine arts degree. I don’t see it as I’m doing that, I’m doing that, I see that as compartmentalising. I’m interested in really in many things which is a blessing and a curse.”
“I waited a long time to have a child and when I did it was a big shock because not only did I not see other Mum’s like me, I knew I could change it. I took photos on every stage and every red carpet. If you can’t see it, be it, I wanted representation and I thought I’m not just going to hide away. When I had Harley I knew I just wanted to do something for Mums.”
